Chaplain Derrick is the father of a son who struggled with Schizophrenia/Paranoid, and watched how God began to Will and to DO in this young man's life, and eventually baptized him and celebrate his marriage July of this year. It was in the 4 1/2 years God taught chaplain Derrick, the value of a soul and how to live out the fruits of the Spirit in his life in order to witness to his son. Chaplain Derrick was impressed by the Lord to start, a 3 day weekend workshop on The Demoniac Mind with a vision of educating and bringing hope to families, eliminating the stigma of mental illness in our faith communities.
Chaplain Derrick experienced firsthand the reluctance of our faith communities to talk about or to minister to individuals with a mental illness and their families who become caregivers. Too often mental illness is thought of as a moral or spiritual failure rather than a treatable illness. Many persons with a mental health issue will go first to their pastor or faith leader. But studies show that many pastors are not effective in providing the support and referrals that individuals and their families need.
Helping faith communities become caring congregations is my passion. The response chaplain Derrick receive from groups using our resources to educate about mental illness is overwhelming. Chaplain Derrick had the privilege of speaking at conferences, mini camp meetings and seminars nationwide to give the message that hope and recovery are possible. Chaplain Derrick speaks about his son and how the Lord began the process of healing his mind and how their is hope.
In these seminars chaplain Derrick discuss the importance of ORDER and the commission GO for a demoniac mind. When mental illness is openly discussed, people will come out of the shadows. It is chaplain Derrick prayer that our congregations will be there to surround them with the care and compassionate support. Hope is a gift our faith communities can give to all of us who struggle with these disorders of the brain.
